John Lasseter begins The Art of Cars 3 by explaining that a film taking several years to make, one must first of all an idea that will give enthusiasm during all this time. He wondered what would become of Flash, a young pilot at the base, once he became a veteran and a new generation would come forward.
The director Brian Fee signs the preface and goes back on his passion for drawing and especially the relationship that he and his two daughters have on this art. He tried to create the same relationship with his team during the production of Cars 3.
Finally, the designers Bill Cone and Jay Shuster come back to their work. The first one evokes the locations for the scenery of the film while the second focuses on the design of modern cars.
This first part focuses first on the design of the characters but especially that dedicated to Jackson Storm. This car was designed as an evolution of Flash design, with more simplicity, more angular shapes and a darker color.
Thomasville, the much older and dilapidated little town, is also part of the presentation of its inhabitants, such as Smokey.
This new part presents cut scenes of the film with their storyboard.
As often with the series “The Art Of”, we also find there the colorscripts. Some pages show us the evolution of the logos of the sponsors since the first film.
The book ends with the thanks of producer Kevin Reher.
The Art of Cars 3 is a really interesting book, full of artworks, storyboards and other sketches of the characters and places. The different comments of the artists is an asset, allowing to better understand their thoughts.
